The Alamo
In February of 1836, Gen. Santa Anna led a Mexican charge to overtake the Texan garrison occupying the Alamo. The Mexicans had between 1800-6,000 soldiers in their number and the Texans fewer than 200, most of which were common citizens. For 13 days, the Texans were able to hold the fort.
As the time went on, the realization that reinforcements were not going to come in time, the commander of the Alamo, William B. Travis had a decision to make. Knowing final assault by the Mexican army was emanate, as legend has it, Colonel Travis drew a line on the ground and asked any man willing to stay and fight to step over — all except one did (he slipped out during the night). The next morning, everyone that stayed ended up sacrificing their lives during the dreadful assault.
As the Gen. Santa Anna continued to invade Texas, a battle cry emerged, “Remember the Alamo”. This battle cry provided a passion that lead to victory.
The memory of the sacrifice of these men made has long outlived their lives and still endures today.
What do you think allowed the men at the Alamo hold out for as long as they did, against such odds?
What were they willing to sacrifice?
